Walking through the streets of Shinjuku, you come across moments when you can't help but point your camera.
High-rise buildings and blue sky, people's casual gestures, shadows falling on the street. The combination of the "Sony α7 III" and the "TAMRON 28-300mm F/4-7.1 Di III VC VXD (Model A074)" lets you freely capture such everyday scenes from wide angle to telephoto.
In this article, along with street snapshot samples taken in Shinjuku with these two pieces of equipment, we introduce how the rendering differs by focal length and the enjoyment of shooting.
A Camera and Lens Purchased from a Customer: Rediscovering Their Appeal
Recently, Five Star Camera purchased a Sony α7 III and a TAMRON 28-300mm F/4-7.1 Di III VC VXD (Model A074) from a customer.
Every day, customers entrust us with a wide variety of cameras and lenses.
Not only new equipment, but also cameras that have aged since their release each have their own appeal.
The α7 III here is a full-frame mirrorless camera released in 2018. The TAMRON A074, on the other hand, is a relatively new high-magnification zoom lens released in 2024.
These two pieces of equipment were released at different times, but when combined, they form a shooting system that covers wide-angle 28mm to telephoto 300mm with a single lens, convenient for walking around the city.

28mm Samples | Capturing the Shinjuku Streetscape Broadly
First, from the wide end at 28mm.
In a shot looking up at Lumine in Shinjuku, the impact of the building and the expanse of the blue sky are captured at the same time.
By fitting not only the architecture but also the people walking around and the road into the frame, the atmosphere of Shinjuku comes across naturally.

■28mm / F7.1 / ISO100 / 1/500 sec
Even at the same 28mm, the impression of a photo changes greatly depending on the direction you point the camera.
In a monochrome photo capturing a running child, the human shadows falling on the pavement are striking.
By taking in not only the child's movement but also the surrounding shadows and the straight lines of the buildings, it becomes a photo that lets you feel the atmosphere of the place.

87–152mm Samples | Finding Subjects Within the City
Zoom in a little, and the city scenery you were looking at starts to look different.
Shot at 87mm is a yellow sign with striking red lettering.
By cropping the sign large while blurring the background, an ordinary part of the city turns into a graphic photo.

■87mm / F6.3 / ISO200 / 1/500 sec
In the sample shot at 152mm, the sunlit person and the person in red crossing the foreground are striking.
Blurring the background and foreground creates depth in the photo.
Searching for how light falls and color combinations in the city is also part of the fun of street snapshots.

■152mm / F7.1 / ISO100 / 1/250 sec
287–300mm Samples | Everyday Life Captured with a Telephoto Lens
Zooming in to nearly 300mm lets you photograph people and objects a little way off at a large size.
In the photo capturing a person wearing earphones, sticker-covered fixtures and a red pillar make up the frame, creating the cluttered atmosphere so typical of Shinjuku.

■287mm / F7.1 / ISO1250 / 1/500 sec
Next, a monochrome shot of a person holding a coffee cup.
The person's expression and the light falling on their arm stand out, and darkening the background naturally draws the eye to the subject.

■300mm / F7.1 / ISO320 / 1/400 sec
A telephoto lens is not only for photographing people large.
In the next photo, the focus is on a red pillar, with the person in the background blurred.
The overlapping colors of red, yellow and gray feel somehow like an abstract work.

■300mm / F7.1 / ISO400 / 1/400 sec
Monochrome Samples | Expressing the City with Light and Shadow
On this shoot, the monochrome photos that made use of light and shadow were also striking.
In the photo of a passageway shot at 135mm, light streaming in through the windows casts regular shadows on the floor.
The combination of the linear architecture and the person in the distance creates a strong rhythm in the photo.

■135mm / F6.3 / ISO400 / 1/500 sec
Meanwhile, in the photo of a "preparing to open" sign and a glass door shot at 28mm, the difference in brightness between inside the shop and outside is striking.
Including the human figures visible beyond the glass, it captures an ordinary scene from everyday life.
