Today's camera is the Nikon COOLPIX W300!

In a word, the defining trait of this camera is toughness.

Besides being waterproof and dustproof, it offers military-standard shockproof performance and can shoot underwater down to 30 meters with the camera alone, so you can take it anywhere with confidence.

So how about the all-important image quality? It turns out to be excellent as well.

First, here is the shot that is also used as the thumbnail.

It was released in 2017 (2019 for the black model only), so it is a relatively recent compact camera and gives a clean, modern rendering. The shadows hold up well, and the fact that it can render even a high-contrast scene like this one properly shows the quality of the NIKKOR lens it carries. The colors are also moderately vivid, so you can get photos with atmosphere straight out of the camera.

As with the first shot, even in a scene with a big difference between light and dark, I think the fine textures are rendered well. Look at the steel beams of the construction materials and you can see that distortion is kept well under control, too. Rugged compacts have to be designed not to break, so their image quality can end up slightly behind other models in the same price range, but the COOLPIX W300 is not like that. Its image quality is tough (strong) as well, so please give it a try if you come across one!
