[With Sample Photos] COOLPIX S1100pj: Capturing Memories and Projecting Them on the Wall

Today I took out the Nikon COOLPIX S1100pj.

It combines the CCD sensor look typical of compact digital cameras from around 2010 with a built-in projector, a rather unique trait even by today's standards.

It doesn't end with just taking photos.
It is a camera designed with sharing what you shot, right there on the spot, in mind.

I took this slightly curious camera out for a walk around town.

The first thing I pointed the lens at was a large crane reaching into the sky.

A modern camera might render this sharper, more accurately, and more vividly. But the rendering of this COOLPIX S1100pj has a little softness, a bit of breathing room.

The reds aren't too flashy, the blue sky feels somehow nostalgic, and the outlines are slightly gentle. That is the charm of compact digital cameras from this era.

The COOLPIX S1100pj doesn't have a large sensor like a premium compact. The background doesn't melt away into big bokeh, and it isn't strong in low light.

Even so, it suits unassuming subjects like this very well.

When you press the shutter toward the strong sun, the frame blooms into white all at once.

The outlines of the buildings melt, the sky blows out, and only the lines on the road barely remain.
Normally this might be called a failed photo. But isn't that how memories of an overly dazzling day really look?

Closing: So We Can Look at Photos Together Again

The appeal of the COOLPIX S1100pj isn't only in how it renders images.

This camera has a built-in projector. You can project the photos you took from the camera itself onto a wall or other surface, which is a very rare feature today.

Now that viewing photos on a smartphone is the norm, photos have become something consumed individually on a small screen.

Projecting the photos you've taken on the spot and viewing them together with someone is a pleasure in its own right. It may be one of the few cameras that tries to treat photographs not as data, but once again as an experience.

but a camera that is a little nostalgic, a little clumsy, and yet definitely fun,
